Apr 8, 2019

Today’s question is:

Here is a summary of this episode:

  • Melatonin is a relatively safe sleep aid with few side effects. It may inhibit fertility, sex drive, as well as having immunosuppressive activity.
  • Valerian officinalis works through GABA-ergic compounds and could be just as efficacious as benzodiazepines as a hypnotic. It should be taken at least 2 hours before bed.
  • Ginkgo biloba is a cognition-enhancing drug that may prevent cognitive decline and treat antidepressant-induced sexual dysfunction. It inhibits platelet-activating factor and should be avoided in patients on anticoagulants and before surgery.
